His native place is Islampur in Sangli district. He is the eldest son of Krishna and Indutai Kumbhar. He has a younger brother and sister. His father worked in Government Fisheries School Satpati village in Thane district, where Kumbhar pursued his education in the Zilla Parishad School, Islampur, Islampur High School, Islampur and Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil College, Islampur. Kumbhar started his career in journalism in the weekly Swaraj and wrote articles in various newspapers. Kumbhar is one of the leading Right To Information (RT) columnists. His columns appear in Marathi newspapers like Lokmat, Sakal and Pudhari He was Proprietor-Editor of a weekly named Bimb-Pratibimb and was the owner of an advertising firm “Indu Publicity”.
